Coupling administration agenda with bipartisan agreement met with opposition.
President Joe Biden spoke over the weekend about his commitment to a dual track infrastructure bill. The president had hopes that one portion of his proposed initiative would be passed in a bipartisan effort while more progessive initiatives might be passed without support from opposition.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and others in Congress expressed disappointment with the president’s strategy to couple additional measures with the bipartisan infrastructure agreement. The minority leaders stated, “I don’t think that’s going to work. I think it was disingenuous in every shape and form.”
In response to this and other negative feedback, the president said, “My comments created the impression that I was issuing a veto threat on the very plan I had just agreed to, which was certainly not my intent.”
